Der ausdruck des rechnens , fast grausam , appraisal—amplified von seinem geschlossenen fist—gives dieser mann eine aggressive luft , aber wir kennen seine identität nicht . Die inschrift auf der brüstung hilft nicht . Diese buchstaben , VVO , wurden als eine form des latin vivo interpretiert ( im leben ) . Dies würde darauf hinweisen, dass das porträt aus dem leben gemalt wurde und sowohl dem subjekt als auch dem maler ein gewisses maß an unsterblichkeit verleiht . Es kann wahrscheinlicher sein , jedoch , eine abkürzung für ein humanistisches motto sein , vielleicht virtus vincit omnia ( tugend erobert alle ) .
